Why Now is the Time to Go Solar in Massachusetts

May 15, 2023

If you live in Massachusetts and have been considering getting solar power for your home, there is no better time than now! It’s always been a worthwhile investment due to the savings and positive impact on the environment, but if you’ve been dragging your feet, it’s time to act.

Massachusetts might not seem like the ideal place to go solar, as it gets an average of 197 sunny days a year. Despite this, Massachusetts is still the eighth top solar energy producer in the US. On top of that, going solar is more practical, reliable, and affordable than ever before. This should be incentive enough to get a quote, but if you need more reasons, we have several.

How Does Solar Save Me Money?

Rising Utility Costs

Electric bills have been skyrocketing as of late thanks to the rising cost of the natural gas, which local electrical companies use to generate power. This affects both heating costs during the winter and cooling costs during the summer. High utility bills can put a huge dent in your monthly budget and savings.

Because of this, getting home solar panels installed is a great investment. SunPower solar panel systems generate more energy than conventional solar panels. If you switched from grid power to solar power, your utility bills could very well drop to $0 per month. You’ll easily save tens of thousands of dollars just from utility savings over the next twenty years. It’s estimated that the money you’ll save will even cover the cost of the panels within four to six years!

Get a 30% Solar Tax Credit

You won’t just be saving money on utilities, either; you can save money on your taxes by going solar. The Federal Solar Investment Tax Credit is one of the many financial benefits of investing and installing solar panels onto your home. It’s a dollar-per-dollar reduction in the amount of income tax you might otherwise owe.

In August 2022, Congress raised the Federal Solar Investment Tax Credit to 30% for solar panels installation that occurs between 2022-2032. It will decrease to 26% in 2033, so it’s best to act now and save the most you can.

Qualify for Massachusetts Solar Incentives

Another reason to get solar power installed now is because of the Solar Massachusetts Renewable Target (SMART) Program. It was put in place to support the development of solar power in Massachusetts and give homeowners the incentive to switch over to solar. The program pays participating solar homeowners every month for ten years for their system’s energy production.

This initiative was enacted back in 2018, but in December 2021 the Massachusetts Department of Public Utilities doubled the SMART Program’s solar capacity from 1600 to 3200 MW. This means more homeowners can sign up for the program and earn payouts from Massachusetts three biggest energy companies. The sooner you sign up, the more likely you’ll be accepted. And as the program features a declining block structure, the sooner you sign up, the higher your payout will be.
