How Many Solar Panels Do You Need?

August 15, 2018

Now that you have decided to go solar, save money, and lower your personal carbon footprint, you may have specific questions about the panels, payments, and installation. One of the more common questions we get is “how do we know how many solar panels a home needs?”  Let’s take a closer look at the factors that go into this decision making process.

Once you have contacted our solar technicians and scheduled an appointment, an evaluation is done on your home. This includes looking closely at your past utility bills to see what your home’s average energy requirements include. Our technicians can calculate how many solar panels you need by multiplying your household’s hourly energy requirement by the peak sunlight hours for your area and dividing that by a panel’s wattage. The goal is to install enough solar panels to greatly reduce, or eliminate your utility bill. Finding the right number of panels is therefore carefully calculated.

We ask three main questions:

  1. How many KiloWatt-Hours (kWh) do you normally use per month based on your utility bills?
  2. What percentage of this number do you want to offset with solar?
  3. Where do you live and how much sunlight does your home generally receive?

This will give you an accurate idea of how many solar panels you will need. Since SunPower panels are 30% more efficient than other solar energy systems, you get more energy per square foot. In short, you will need fewer SunPower panels than other competitors!

In addition, SunPower panels have the lowest degradation rate in the industry, at just 0.25%.  You can be confident that your panels will produce more energy than any other system now, and for many years to come.
