5 Ways to Save on your Electric Bill this Summer

April 1, 2018

After the winter we just had, many New Englanders are looking forward to kicking off summer and getting outside to enjoy the warm weather. There are many perks to summertime, including the glorious weather, entertaining outdoors, enjoying the beach and, of course, taking a much needed vacation. There are, however, some things about summer that would be great to get rid of altogether, like sweltering heat waves, high humidity, and those dreaded air conditioning bills! While we can’t do much to control Mother Nature and all she throws at us, we can help you control your electric bill this summer. Here are 5 ways to conserve on your electric bill this summer.

  1. Investigate solar power from SunPower by BlueSel. You will be amazed at how you can reduce, if not, eliminate your electric bills altogether. Check out our solar savings calculator on our website for a peek into what solar can do for your utility bills.
  2. Switch your thermostat to one that is programmable. A programmable or smart thermostat can help you only use the air conditioning when you need it. For example, you can program the air to come on when you normally arrive home and shut down when you head off to bed or leave for work every morning. With a smart thermostat you can control the usage right from your phone or tablet. According to the ENERGY STAR program, pre-programmed thermostat settings can save you about $180 per year in reduced energy consumption.
  3. Seal up your home. If you have drafty windows, consider replacing them with windows that keep the heat in during the winter and the cold air conditioning in during the summer. In addition, seal up openings along the base of doors or around vents or electrical panels to keep the cool air from escaping during the hot months. While you are at it, keep shades drawn to block out the sun during the height of daytime heat to avoid unnecessary and unbearable temperature increases and fluctuations in a room that has direct sun exposure.
  4. Shut off appliances that are not in use and that use larger, heat-producing appliances at night. If you don’t use your computer or toaster oven during the daytime hours, then shut down and unplug them if you can. Use heat-producing appliances like the dryer and dishwasher at night when you won’t over-tax your air conditioner. When using your clothes washer, try setting it to use cold water rather than hot.
  5. Consider how much you use the lights in your home. Shutting off lights and switching to more energy efficient options can save you hundreds of dollars per year!
