A New Start: 2021 Environmental GoalsJanuary 13, 2021
Well, we have finally said goodbye to the longest year of all-time, 2020, and we are charging, full-steam ahead in 2021 with the hopes that this will be a year full of good health and positive change.
In today’s blog, let’s examine what you can do personally, if you choose, to do your part in helping our environment. And, let’s take a look at what we can all do as a worldwide community to ensure that our future remains as bright as the sun.
Save Energy (And Money) Within Your Home
Saving energy and helping the environment starts at home with simple and straightforward techniques that you can act on today! Eliminating a few wasteful habits can go a long way towards saving energy and supporting renewable energy. Oh, and it will also help your wallet feel a bit more full at the end of each month as well.
Make Sure Appliances Are Shut Down (And Unplugged)
Today’s households are filled with gadgets and gizmos galore. While these devices and appliances have made everyday life easier, more convenient, and more entertaining, they can also be a heavy drain on your home’s energy. To remedy this power drain, make sure that you unplug devices such as phone chargers and unused appliances.
Perform Home Upkeep
Routine home upkeep can actually go a long way towards saving energy. For example, making sure that your home’s windows actually seal and secure when closed can prevent household heat loss. This tactic can be applied to doors and cracks as well. Keeping up with your home and upgrading doors and windows is one of the easiest and smartest ways to save money and energy today.
Light Your Home With Natural Sunlight
We all understand that shutting lights off when you leave a room is a classic way to save energy and money at home. However, we often tend to overuse electricity even during the day. So, open your shades and let the sunshine in to embrace our favorite energy providing friend, the sun. You’ll also get a hefty and healthy dose of vitamin D as well.
Invest In Solar or Green Technology
With so much green technology and solar gadgets available and accessible on the market today, there’s never been a better time to add energy-efficient technology into your home and daily lifestyle. Buying into solar technology, even small solar gadgets, drives the market for solar innovation, which is one of the best ways that you can support green initiatives.
Install a Smart Thermostat
Installing a smart thermostat to control the temperature within your home puts energy control directly into the palm of your hand via your smartphone. Many smart thermostats feature functions that allow you to set temperatures and control climate while away from your home. This means that you no longer have to waste heating energy to keep your home warm when you are at the store, picking up the kids, or at work. You can also turn the thermostat up before you come home so that you can enter a warm house. Smart functions usually include stats and data so that you can monitor your energy consumption more closely, eliminating wasteful habits if necessary.
Outdoor Solar Lights
Are you someone who likes to keep a light on outside during the night? Maybe you have a spouse or family member that comes in from working a late-night shift or at the wee hours of the morning. Thankfully, solar lights have come a long way since their inception. Best of all, they do not require utility-based electricity to function correctly. In fact, these lights charge all day while out in the sun, providing light at night, shaving a bit of money off your monthly utility bill, and providing you with a guiding light at night.
Invest in Solar Panels
Well, no surprise here. But it’s becoming widely known and accepted that investing in solar panels goes a long way towards reducing your carbon footprint and your monthly energy bill. This potentially saves you tens of thousands of dollars over the course of years and reduces your overall carbon footprint to boot. Saving money while saving the environment, it’s a win-win!
Solar panel technology continues to innovate, not only becoming more efficient but smarter as well. Solar systems, such as the systems developed by SunPower, give the power of energy consumption and usage into the hands of the homeowner, rather than the utility company.
Get Involved In Solar Initiatives
The Extension of the Solar Investment Tax Credit (ITC)
Put in place to support the further growth of the solar industry, the Solar Investment Tax Credit, a credit that allows solar panel purchasers to reduce their annual income taxes, going towards the purchase of their solar system. Since this credit was put in place, the industry has seen a 52% annual increase each year. The ITC has now been extended by congress, keeping its 26% dollar-for-dollar tax credit through 2022, before falling to 22% in 2023 and 10% in 2024.
Contact Your Local, State, and Federal Representatives
Contacting your local, state, and federal representatives and letting them know that your vote goes to those that support the ITC, solar power, and green, renewable energy initiatives worldwide is one of, if not, the best way to support environmental causes in 2021.
The future of our worldwide environment requires voices that speak out against regressive and environmentally hazardous practices and support progressive green initiatives. Our local, national, and worldwide economies and lifestyles hinge upon long-term solar and other green solutions to maintain normalcy and innovation.
Here at BlueSel, we seek to be actively involved in our local solar community as supporters who have seen firsthand the power of solar technology and green innovations. Together, let’s create a 2021 that pushes our environmental economy and planet further into the right direction.
