Why 2018 is the Year to Go Solar

September 11, 2018

The year may be more than halfway over, but there is still time to get in on the savings by installing a solar energy system for your home. Maybe you have been thinking about going solar since your neighbor showed you his utility bill at zero, or maybe you watched the most recent report on global climate change and want to do your part. Whatever your reasoning, the time to act is now. This fiscal year offers some great opportunities to go solar in 2018. Here are some reasons:

Utility Bills

If you have friends, relatives, or neighbors who have already switched over to solar, you have probably heard from them that your utility bill will either be greatly reduced or, in many cases, be completely eliminated. This is true! Depending upon your current usage and ability of your house to capture good sunlight, you too can be one of the lucky ones to get in on this savings this year. Once the application permitting and installation processes are complete, your home starts collecting the sun’s rays, and the saving has begun.

Federal Tax Credit

Another reason why this year is a good one to go solar is the opportunity to use the Federal Tax Credit for offsetting the cost of solar panels. This year, the tax credit is at 30%, but will shrink to 26 percent after 2019, and then down to 10 percent in 2021. The end of this credit is estimated to be in 2022.

Home Value Increase

If you are looking to add some value or equity to your home, solar may be the way to do it. In a large study, the U.S. Department of Energy’s Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory looked at the value of homes with rooftop solar. One of the findings included home buyers consistently pay more for homes with solar installed. In fact, the homeowners who had invested in solar made back at least as much they spent buying the system. Plus, homes with solar installed spent less time on the market and sold much quicker than homes without solar installations.
