Some people think solar is expensive. Many years ago it used to be expensive, but recent advances in technology have lowered the cost of solar energy systems by 40 % in the last 5 years. Also, the introduction of several new financial incentives has brought this cost down even further. So in today's world, the actual cost of your solar energy system really depends on two things:
- Do you know how much solar energy your home can generate?
- Do you know how easily you can access the credits and rebates that can cut the system price in half?
As you can see, the answer to "how much does a solar system cost?", is not the same as it was yesterday. To answer the cost question for your specific home, we’d have to ask some easy questions about your home and your goals. There are a lot of different components that go into purchasing a solar system depending on your needs and circumstances, and there are a lot of incentives and rebates available as well. After we have answered the following three main questions, we can then begin to design your system:
- Your location: we use Google maps to research the location of your home and which direction your home is facing. You also want to have minimal tree coverage because the trees destruct the your solar systems ability to perform. Your home also needs to face as much south as possible, because that is where the sun comes from.
- The location of the system itself: after we have researched your home on google maps, we then determine where on your property the solar system would perform the best, such as; your main roof, garage roof, dormer, or a ground mount.
- How much of your utilities you use each month: we will determine this by looking at your electric bill, which we will collect at the time of your free solar site analysis. We will need to know this because this will help us determine the size of the solar system that will cover your needs.
Once we determine the solar potential for your home, we can then determine the cost of your system. The good news is, the initial cost will be reduced in half with all of the federal and state tax credits and rebates available. If you need financing for your system, we also have several alternatives available that involve little or no money down if you qualify. To learn more about incentives and rebates,

Have you heard about the revolution in solar economics? No?
Well, it used to take 20 years to pay for a solar system, but now it takes 4 to 5 years! Here’s how;
First, there is a Federal tax credit which covers 30% of gross cost at installation with no maximum cap on the credit.
Then from the state of Massachusetts, there is a Renewable Energy Tax Credit, which is 15% of net expenditure, $1,000 maximum.
On top of that, MassCEC (Massachusetts Clean Energy Center) gives a Commonwealth Solar II Rebate;
- Homeowners that have a typical 5kW system installed may be eligible to get a Commonwealth Solar rebate check of up to $2,000. They can receive their check 4-8 weeks after the system has been installed. The $2,000 is based on the state paying you $.40 a watt. Blue Selenium Solar does all the paperwork, sends it in, and you to do is sign on the dotted line!
- There's a couple of other adders that can increase your solar rebate if you qualify. Here’s what it means; if you buy Massachusetts manufactured components, you can get $.05 a watt, moderate home value adder and moderate household income adder.
- To see if you qualify, check with us if you think your home is of moderate value or your household income is of moderate value. You could get up to $.40 a watt more which would double your rebates!
There is one more incentive that is a production based incentive, called SRECS(Solar Renewable Energy Credits) that caused a huge revolution in solar economics and helped reduce the typical payback periods from 20 years to 5 years! To find out more, stay tuned for our next article.
